The seductive and acrobatically refined show of Taiwanese artists from the Eye Catching Circus brings an insight into the Asian style of contemporary circus to Letní Letná.
In this sophisticated and graceful performance by the innovative women's circus Eye Catching Circus, the artistry is of a high standard, but it is not just about spectacle. Rather, it is a restless, stereotype-busting group portrait of a handful of women under 30 struggling to maintain their own balance in today's expectation-laden society.
The production #Since1994 is a narrative of six female performers, born around 1994, who use non-verbal and artistic means to tell the story of what it is like to be a woman in their country.
In Taiwan, labels still exist to describe society's expectations of women's lifestyles in terms of internal and external appearance. A group of female circus performers, challenging traditional notions of femininity and trying to maintain a balance in modern society through circus arts. They explore the meaning of what it means to be a woman and how to be yourself.
Sometimes they compete, but often they support each other, falling, rolling, twisting, collapsing, intertwining or hanging suspended from a symbolic frame, all in an attempt to find their truest selves.
The show #Since1994 was performed at the Assembly of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2023 and won accolades from audiences and professionals alike. It will end its European tour in Prague after playing in France and the UK.
